2021 UEC Road European Championships - Trentino

Ellen van Dijk (Trek-Segafredo, The Netherlands) has taken the victory of the road race at the European Championships of Trentino 2021.

The Women's Elite race of the European event was 107.2 kilometres long -formed by eight laps to the circuit of Trento. After the first half, Van Dijk made her decisive move and although at first she was followed by Soraya Paladin (Italy), Romy Kasper (Germany) and Aude Biannic (France).

The rider -who has won four European TT titles, put up a pace that exhausted her companions until she found herself riding on her own. Behind her, a group that included riders like Lianne Lippert, Marlen Reusser, Kasia Niewiadoma, Annemiek van Vleuten and Demi Vollering, was trying to close the gap, but they couldn't organise themselves, to the advantage of Van Dijk.

The rider crossed the finish line one minute and 18 seconds ahead Lippert and Rasa Leleivyte, who completed the final podium. This is the fourth road title for The Netherlands in six years that these Championships have existed.

"I didn't expect it, my role was to support my teammates, but I felt good, and I wanted to go on the breakaway," said Van Dijk. "Little by little I managed to outpace all the others, also because it was my only way to try and win, not being the best sprinter.

"In the finale, I didn't know the chasers had come that close, and maybe it was better this way."
