Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert is set to have four riders participating in the road races of the World Championships, the biggest number in its history.

The road races of Flanders 2021 are approaching, and the Belgian team will have four riders starting with their country's selections. While Biniam Girmay Hailu will be in the U23 road race with the Eritrean team, Odd Christian Eiking, Danny van Poppel and Georg Zimmermann will be in the Elite race with the teams of Norway, the Netherlands and Germany, respectively.

On the 24th of September, the U23 peloton will complete a 160.9-kilometre route and there will be Girmay Hailu just weeks after taking his first victory in Europe at the Classic Gran Besançon Doubs. "Participating at the World Championships in Belgium, on the home soil of my team, is a great motivating factor!" said the Eritrean. "I feel relaxed, and I'm convinced that our team will be among the strongest and smartest in the peloton.

"We will focus on our own strength, and we've got several cards to play. That could be mine, we will see what happens during the race. Anyway, I'm well-prepared thanks to the Druivenkoers in Overijse. I love the Belgian classics, and I can't wait to defend the colors of Eritrea on the cobbles this Friday!"

The Elite men will tackle a 268.3-kilometre route between Antwerp and Leuven that has no shortage of punchy climbs, some of them even featuring cobblestones, which will make it an unforgettable typically Belgian race. Eiking arrives after his long spell wearing the Red Jersey at the Vuelta a España and having finished in the 23rd position at the European championships.

This will be the second time of Zimmermann at the road race of the championships, last year he was selected for the German team at his first year as a professional rider. "Our contenders will have to take us into consideration, because we've got serious candidates with a very nice palmares," said the rider. "This was also the case last year, when I participated to my first Elite World Championships. I rode in support for my teammates and this performance is one of the reasons why I again received the confidence of the national coach.

"The parcours is not familiar to me, but there's plenty of time left to do a recon. I performed well in each of the races in which I participated after the Tour de France, also last week in Eschborn-Frankfurt. So I'm very confident for Sunday!"

And this will be the third time of Van Poppel with te Dutch national team. "It is fantastic to be able to participate in the World Championships in Belgium!" the Dutchman commented. "This event comes at a good moment in my career, as I'm in the best shape of my life and as I acquired a lot of experience. It will be the third World Championship in the pro category in my career and thanks to the many races passing on these roads, I know the parcours really well.

"Even last week, the Primus Classic was a perfect recon of the Flandrien circuit. The Omloop van het Houtland this Thursday will enable me to put the finishing touch to my preparation in order to be ready to support our leader Mathieu van der Poel. I expect to play a role in the final for the Dutch team!"
