UAE Team Emirates' Sebastian Molano has taken the victory of the first stage of the Giro di Sicilia.
The Italian race kicked off with a 179-kilometre race between Avola and Licata over a route that was bound to finish in a bunch sprint. The breakaway of the day was formed by three riders and behind them, UAE Team Emirates took control of the pace of the pack to force a fast finale.
With 14 kilometres to go, the escapees were caught, and the stage was sentenced to a bunch sprint. Although Vincenzo Albanese (Eolo-Kometa) tried to escape on the last stretch of the stage, UAE Team Emirates once again increased the speed to catch him and then continued to put Molano on a good spot ahead of the final metres, something that Max Richeze did very well, with an acceleration that not only allowed the Colombian to win the stage, but also for the Argentinean to finish third.
"The team did an amazing work all day in controlling the race," said Molano. "The finish suited me well and suited Richeze also, who gave me the perfect lead-out. In the last metres we knew we had to be in the lead with all the corners, so I'm really pleased it worked out well and thankful to all the team, my family and everyone who has supported me. Tomorrow looks like it could be a good finish for me again, so we'll try and go for win number two."
