Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) has taken the victory at the third stage of the Giro di Sicilia.

The third stage of the Italian race took the peloton between Termini Imerese and Caronia over a 180-kilometre route that featured one hors-category climb and an uphill finish. Abner González took control of the front of the peloton at around 60 kilometres to the finish, setting a rhythm that made the group smaller and managed to catch the breakaway.

Rojas and Soler then pulled and managed to build with Valverde a gap to control ahead of the last climb. Einer Rubio and Davide Villella were the last riders to work for the former World Champion, to then deliver a finish that gave him the victory of the third stage of the race and the lead of the General Classification. After the rider crossed the finish line, he crashed, but without any consequences.

"I am very happy for the victory," said Valverde. "We started the stage with the idea of getting the victory, and we succeeded... even if the finish was unexpected. It was bad fortune that I crashed after the bicycle stumbled over the cables, but I think it didn't leave any consequences. We will see how well I am after tonight to see how we can face tomorrow's stage."
