Mark Cavendish (Deceuninck-Quick-Step) has sprinted to victory in the one-day race Münsterland Giro.

The Briton has taken his tenth victory of the season at the 188-kilometre race that took place between Enschede (The Netherlands) and Munster, in Germany. The Belgian team started pulling from early on the race to take advantage of the crosswinds and caused chaos with 100 kilometres to go.

Deceuninck-Quick-Step had five riders in the front group and continued setting a high rhythm that managed to not only reeled back in the breakaway quite soon, but also leave some pure sprinters behind. Cavendish made a first move with 30 kilometres to go, and then he was followed by his teammates Josef Cerny and Iljo Keisse, which forced the competition to control and broke this group even further.

At two kilometres from the finish, a group of four broke free, including Cerny and Cavendish, and the Czech ITT champion did an outstanding lead out of the Briton, and he finished it off by taking his tenth win of the season, crossing the finish line ahead Alexis Renard (Israel Start Up Nation) and Morten Hulgaard (Uno-X Pro Cycling).

"It was a hard day, with bad weather and lots of wind," said Cavendish. "We forced a split at one point and worked that into our advantage, committing 100% to the effort. We wanted to make it a tough race, and we did just that.

"In the final kilometres, we began attacking and four of us moved away. I had Josef with me, and he did a great job, as did the entire squad. I am happy to get a win so late in the season and to add to the team's tally."
