Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix) has completed the podium of Paris-Roubaix by crossing the finish line after Sonny Colbrelli and Florian Vermeersch.

The 118th edition of the "Hell of the North" was cold and rainy, a scenario that has been missing for a few years. The Dutchman started as one of the favourites to take the final win, and he followed the movements at all times. When Gianni Moscon, Vermeersch and Tom Van Asbroeck, were in front, the rider was part of the chasing group.

After the Italian of Ineos-Grenadiers attacked from the head of the race, Van der Poel continued to join the second group and eventually formed a trio in front with Colbrelli and Vermeersch. The men disputed a three-rider sprint and the Dutchman crossed the finish line behind the winner of the day, Colbrelli and the Belgian rider of Lotto-Soudal.

"I am happy with my third place," said Van der Poel. "I raced the way I wanted to, and I went down fighting. But I am proud to be on the podium at my first participation."

"My legs weren't good any more at the end. I was continuously on the limit for the last 30 or 40 kilometres. The others were probably also on the limit, but with me, it was really finished. In the sprint, I thought I was the least broken, but apparently I was the most broken."
