Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) has taken the victory of Il Lombardia after winning a two-man sprint against Fausto Masnada.

The two-time winner of the Tour de France winner attacked from the favourites' group with around 35 kilometres to go and was chased by Masnada (Deceuninck-Quick-Step), who eventually caught him. The Slovenian did most of the work to keep the chasers at bay and after a tense finale, he could cross the finish line just ahead of the Italian, in his first participation ever.

The rider now has a place along with Fausto Coppi, Eddy Merckx and Bernard Hinault as winner of the Tour de France and the race of the Fallen Leaves on the same season.

"It's crazy to finish the season like this," said Pogacar. "When I attacked, I thought others would come with me, but the race was tough. I was aware of Masnada's return on the descent. Fortunately, he was not the best sprinter.

"I'm a man without words. I knew Masada knew these roads pretty well. Today was a good day. For me, every victory is important, but this one is a special one because I've been dreaming to race and win Il Lombardia for a long time."
