Remco Evenepoel (Deceuninck-Quick-Step) has finished Il Lombardia more than three minutes behind the winner of the day Tadej Pogacar, on the 19th place.

The Belgian rider started the 2021 edition of the "race of the fallen leaves" as one of the favourites. But on the last climb of the day, he couldn't keep up with the pace of the main group and in the end, he crossed the finish line in 19th place, at three minutes and 13 seconds from Pogacar.

"I had bad legs for five minutes, between three and four kilometres before the top," said Evenepoel to Belgian media. "It went a bit too fast for me, so I chose my own pace. I'm glad I was still able to finish in the top 20. Moreover, we were second with the team, so that is a good result. Am I disappointed? No, of course not. In a race like this, it's all about the legs. If you don't have them at the right time, you have to accept it. It's no shame."

The 21-year-old returned to the race more than a year after he suffered a horror crash on the same race, in which he fell off a bridge, fracturing his pelvis and having a right lung contusion.

"In the beginning it felt strange to race here again, what happened last year was going through my head," the Belgian explained. "My body was shaking all morning. In the first descents I didn't feel really comfortable yet, but in the final it went better."
