Alpecin-Fenix's Petr Vakoc is set to retire from professional cycling at the end of the 2021 season.

The Czech rider has announced through his social media channels that he will hang the bike after the Giro del Veneto in Italy. The 1.1 race will take the peloton between Cittadella and Padova over a 168.8-kilometre route, and a rolling course will be the place where he will say farewell to the pro pack.

The rider started his career in the WorldTour at the team currently known as Deceuninck-Quick-Step. There, he achieved victories in races like De Brabantse Pijl and the Classic Sud Ardeche, as well as the overall win at the Czech Cycling Tour in 2015 and in stages of the Tour de Pologne and the Tour of Britain.

Vakoc's life and career were put at risk when a truck ran him over when he was training in South Africa with Bob Jungels and Laurens De Plus at the start of 2018. After a difficult back surgery, the rider missed the entire 2018 season, and at the start of 2020, he moved to Alpecin-Fenix.

"On Wednesday the Giro del Veneto will be my last race as a pro as I have decided to step back from road cycling and focus on new challenges," said the rider through social media. "Thank you all for making it one unforgettable journey!"
