AG2R La Mondiale's Oliver Naesen has talked about the financial situation of the riders in the peloton and how it will be a lesson for the future.

Belgian broadcaster Sporza unveiled that 60% of professional riders of the country have suffered from the economic crisis and that those are now surviving with in between 20% and 40% less than the amount of money that they normally receive.

"Nobody gets richer in a crisis," said Naesen to Sporza. "But I think it feels like a punishment somehow how weak we are in our shoes about an agreed contract. That weighs in a way. Everyone has to debts to pay."

Naesen also commented on the idea that the public has about cyclists' income. "I've seen often in comments on articles that nobody should have compassion for us because we earn more than a normal person," the Belgian explained. "But that is not the case for all of us. I know many colleagues who right now are paying more than they are making, and they have had to adapt their lifestyle to their income.

"Also, cyclists are not trained to handle money well. I am not surprised that many riders are shocked when the money doesn't come in. It is very important to turn every euro twice before you spend it. It is for everyone a valuable lesson for the future."

The Belgian rider explained that some riders actually don't have any other options in the current situation. "In the business world you can't imagine that your wages disappear of get cut in half while you do your job," Naesen said. "We're not technically unemployed, right?

"Some teams say: 'We will pay you 30% less: is that right?' Actually not, but do we have a choice? We are weak. We don't have a union that stands up for us. I can't complain myself but there are colleagues in different circumstances."
