Adam Yates (Ineos-Grenadiers) has taken the victory of the third stage in the Volta a Catalunya and has seized the lead of the General Classification.

The first test in the mountains in the Spanish race was 203.1 kilometres long and took the riders towards the Pyrenees and with a finish in the Hors Category climb of Vallter 2000. A group of ten riders formed the escape group of the day and included riders like Francisco Galván, Sean Bennett, Clement Venturini, Thymen Arensman amd Reinardt Janse Van Rensburg.

The riders built a gap of more than twelve minutes with a pack that was led by teams like Jumbo-Visma, Deceuinck-Quick-Step -attempting to defend the leader's jersey of Joao Almeida, Ineos-Grenadiers and Bahrain Victorious, among others. Kamp and Arensman were the only to riders that remained in front ahead of climb of the last kilometres, while behind, Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) made the first move and was quickly followed by Sepp Kuss (Jumbo-Visma).

Valverde made several moves until he got rid of the rest of the group and was later on joined by his former teammates Nairo Quintana (Arkea-Samsic) and Richard Carapaz (Ineos-Grenadiers) as well as by Trek-Segafredo's Giulio Ciccone. This small group got to Arensman while behind Adam Yates (Ineos-Grenadiers), Kuss and Hugh Carthy (EF Education-Nippo) were trying to bridge.

Several riders made moves until only Yates and Kuss remained in front and shortly after, the Briton left his companion behind and continued to take the stage win -in a place in which his brother Simon had already won before- and the lead of the General Classification.

Esteban Chaves (Team BikeExchange), Valverde, Geraint Thomas (Ineos-Grenadiers) and Harm Vanhoucke (Lotto Soudal) completed the top five of the day. Yates' teammate Richie Porte climbed to the second place of the overall standings at 45 seconds and Almeida dropped to the third position.
