Groupama-FDJ's Miles Scotson has taken the victory of the first stage in the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana.

The first stage of the Spanish race -which got new dates due to the Covid-19 pandemic- was 168.9 kilometres long between Elche and Ondara. The peloton was surprised by the rain and with 50 kilometres to go a group of around 16 riders jumped from the pack and caught the escapees.

On the last descent of the day, Scotson made a move that surprised the small group and took a solo victory, crossing the finish line 28 seconds ahead the rest of that reduced group. The Australian also took the lead of the General Classification.

"With ten kilometres to go, I was pretty sure I was going to win, but I started thinking too much for the overall, taking as many seconds as I could," said Scotson.

"In the end, I threw away a lot of seconds just by trying to not break too much in a roundabout. It was really slippery today, it probably hadn’t rained here in a while. I’m super happy. We came here to win a stage with Arnaud. I didn’t expect to win one myself, but I had good legs and took the opportunity."
