Enric Mas (Movistar) has taken the victory of the third stage in the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana and seized the lead of the General Classification.

The Spaniard started the third stage of competition in the fourth GC position, 35 seconds behind the leader during the two previous stages Miles Scotson (Groupama-FDJ). The Queen stage of the Spanish race was 165 kilometres long with a mountain finish on the second category climb of the Alto de la Reina.

With 30 kilometres to go, and as the pack caught the last of the escapees, Mas made his move and left behind Stefan Küng (Groupama-FDJ) one of the GC favourites because of his TT abilities. But the Swiss rider caught the Spaniard on the last descent of the day, before the last climb.

Arkea-Samsic's Elie Gisbert was the first rider to launch an attack and was followed by Mas and Victor Lafay (Cofidis). The Spaniard rode away on the last metres and crossed the finish line on his own, taking an advantage of 38 seconds over Küng ahead of the Individual Time Trial of the fourth stage.

"This victory really feels great – my first win with these colours!," said Mas. "I’m super proud of how the team has worked today; they all really were on top of their game today, just like over the whole Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana, always Trying to give their best. We’ve been able to finish this off and it’s been in great part because of them.

"We played both cards, not just mine – together with Nelson (Oliveira), we took all chances we could, and he did an awesome job, also trying to stay clear of the front group. He wasn’t lucky enough to escape, and in the end it was up to me to create that decisive gap after his earlier moves.

"It’s a short, flat TT tomorrow – we’ll have to give our best; being honest, it doesn’t suit me that well, but I’m really motivated to try and keep the jersey.
