Simon Yates (Team BikeExchange) has taken the victory of the second stage of the Tour of the Alps, climbing up to the GC lead.

The escape of the day was caught with 30 kilometres to go and soon enough attacks started happening in the pack. Yates himself made a couple of moves and the last one could only be followed by Pavel Sivakov (Ineos-Grenadiers), but the chasers were catching on them so the Briton made a new move that left the others behind.

Yates crossed the finish line on his own, 41 seconds ahead of Sivakov and 58 ahead of Dan Martin, Aleksandr Vlasov and Jefferson Cepeda. The Briton also climbed to the top of the overall classification.

"I tried really hard; it was a very tough climb," said Yates. "Those guys were not easy to get rid of, I tried several times and that really took it out of me for the valley road to the finish.

"I enjoy these (shorter) stages, we race from the start rather than messing around for 150km and then racing only for the final. It was a good day for us, my first win of the year so I am very happy. So far so good but there's still a lot of very hard stages to come so we will see what we can do in the next few days."
