UAE Team Emirates' Tadej Pogacar has taken the victory of Liege-Bastogne-Liege, the first of his career.

La Doyenne was 259.5 kilometres long over the familiar route and the first escape of the day included riders like Loïc Vliegen, Sergei Chernetski and Tomasz Marczynski, and it built a gap of more than eight minutes. Behind them, teams like Movistar, Jumbo-Visma, Deceuninck-Quick-Step and Groupama-FDJ were pushing behind in the peloton to catch them and position their leaders ahead of the climbs.

Just after the 80-kilometre mark, several attacks started happening in the pack but each of them were neutralised by the rest. With around 40 kilometres to go, and as the front group also suffered breaks due to several moves, the rhythm set in the peloton by Ineos-Grenadiers broke it and left behind riders like the World Champion Julian Alaphilippe, but after several attempts he managed to get to the group again ten kilometres later.

With 21 kilometres to go, the reduced pack caught the remaining escapees and soon after Richard Carapaz (Ineos-Grenadiers) launched an attack, leaving behind riders like Tadej Pogacar, Jack Haig, Sergio Higuita and Esteban Chaves, among others. Soon after, the Ecuadorian was caught and a group formed by Michael Woods, David Gaugu, Pogacar, Julian Alaphilippe and Alejandro Valverde -in his 41st birthday- made a new move that left all the competition behind.

Soon it was evident the victory was set to be fought by this group and the first rider to make a move was the Spaniard former world champion -and former multiple winner of the race, but soon the rest caught up to him and Pogacar was the first to cross the finish line, followed by Alaphilippe and Gaudu.
