Sam Bennett (Deceuninck-Quick-Step) has taken the victory of the first stage and the lead of the General Classification at the Volta ao Algarve.

The first stage of the Portuguese race was 189.5 kilometres long between Lagos and Portimao and was expected to finish in a bunch sprint. But things didn't go as smoothly as it was expected and riders like Shane Archbold and Fabio Jakobsen crashed with four kilometres to go.

Bennett showed once again to be one of the best sprinters in the pack by accelerating just after Michael Morkov did an outstanding lead-out, crossing the finish line just ahead of Danny van Poppel (Intermarche-Wanty Gobert) and Jon Aberasturi (Caja Rural).

"Not everything went as we planned today," said Bennett at the end of the stage. "The finale was very hectic, but the boys did a fantastic job and kept their calm, which was of great help. The legs felt good, but there were a lot of crashes and we spent a lot of energy coming back to the front and keeping our position.

"I didn't know how my condition was going to be after a month with no racing and didn't expect it to be that hard, but I'm happy I could finish it off and I got the yellow jersey as a bonus."
