Ineos Grenadiers' Filippo Ganna has taken the victory of the opening stage at the Giro d'Italia and wore the first Maglia Rosa of the 2021 edition of the race.

The Italian grand tour opened with an individual time trial of 8.6 kilometres in Torino. One of the first riders to set a competitive time was Mathias Brändle (Israel Start Up Nation) who completed the course in nine minutes and nine seconds, being four seconds faster than Ineos Grenadiers' Jonathan Castroviejo.

Two riders of Jumbo-Visma, Tobias Foss and Edoardo Affini were the next ones to be on the hot seat, waiting for other specialists like the World Champion Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers) to go down the ramp. The Italian did what was expected and he completed the route in eight minutes and 47 seconds, setting a time difficult to equal for the riders that still had to go.

Meanwhile, Remco Evenepoel (Deceuninck-Quick-Step) was returning to racing after the injuries caused in Il Lombardia 2020 left him out of competition for ten months. The Belgian finished the fight against the clock in nine minutes and six seconds.

The GC riders that set the best times were Joao Almeida and Evenepoel (Deceuninck-Quick-Step) who finished 17 and 19 seconds behind the stage winner, Astana-Premier Tech's Aleksandr Vlasov who was 24 seconds slower than Ganna, Pavel Sivakov (Ineos Grenadiers) at 36 seconds Hugh Carthy (EF Pro Cycling) at 38 seconds and Simon Yates at 38 seconds.
