Mikel Landa (Bahrain Victorious) has been forced to withdraw from the Giro d'Italia after a hard crash on the fifth stage.

The Spaniard -who was showing to have a good shape at the third stage by attacking and taking with him some of the favourites at the mountain finish- crashed against one of the race men that was in charge of signalling a traffic island. On that same incident, Joe Dombrowski (UAE Team Emirates) and who was wearing the mountain jersey, also crashed hard.

TV images showed Landa on the ground while one teammate and a team car assisted him, but unable to stand up. Soon after, an ambulance came to the site of the crash and took him away, which meant the end of the race for him. Bahrain Victorious will update on the state of the rider later on the day.

Italian broadcaster RAI has informed that Landa was conscious when he was taken to the hospital. At the end of the stage, it was visible that Dombrowski had some blood on his face.

"A small distraction at this point of the race can end up in a hard crash," said Alberto Bettiol (EF Education-Nippo) in an interview with the RAI.

Update: Bahrain Victorious explained through a statement the extension of the rider's injuries. "Landa has been taken to Riccione Hospital, where he is receiving treatment for a broken collarbone and multiple ribs on his left side. Landa will spend the night in the hospital under observation and undergo further investigation. Landa remained conscious throughout and is in good spirits to get back on the bike as soon as possible."
