Alberto Bettiol (EF Education-Nippo) has taken the victory of the 18th stage in the Giro d'Italia, Egan Bernal managed to keep the lead of the General Classification.

The 18th day of competition in Italy was over a 231-kilometre mostly flat route that featured two short climbs in the last kilometres, which gave in to an uneventful day for the General Classification as the pack arrived 23 minutes and 30 seconds behind the winner of the day.

The group that formed the breakaway of the day included 23 riders and names like Andrea Vendrame, Simon Pellaud, Gorka Izagirre, Remi Cavagna, Alberto Bettiol and Nicolas Roche, among others. With 23 kilometres to go, Cavagna increased the pace and created a gap with his companions, behind him Bettiol and Roche went on to chase him.

On the final climb, Bettiol left the Irishman behind and soon after also left Cavagna struggling behind, to be caught by the chasers. Although Roche got closer to the Italian, the winner of the 2019 Tour of Flanders managed to cross the finish line on his own.

The peloton crossed the finish line 23 minutes and 30 seconds behind and Egan Bernal maintained like this the lead of the overall standings.
