Richard Carapaz (Ineos-Grenadiers) has taken the win of the fifth stage of the Tour de Suisse and got Yellow at the end of the day.

The riders faced a real climbing day in the fifth stage of the Swiss race, with a 175.2-kilometre route that featured two climbs of the first category and an ascending finish. The escape of the day had the presence of the wearer of the Yellow Jersey Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix) but the Dutchman could only hold the lead until the penultimate climb.

Just after the pack caught the last of the escapees -Herman Pernsteiner (Bahrain-Victorious)- Esteban Chaves (BiekExchange) and Antwan Tolhoek (Jumbo-Visma), made a move and were later joined by Jakob Fuglsang (Astana-Premier Tech). Behind, a top-class chasing group included Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-Quick-Step), Rigoberto Uran (EF Education-Nippo), Max Schachmann (Bora-hansgrohe) and Richard Carapaz.

With four kilometres to go, the Ecuadorian winner of the 2019 Giro d'Italia jumped from this group while in front only Fuglsang remained. The rider then caught the Dane and although the latter tried to keep on his wheel, Carapaz left him behind with 100 metres to go.

The rider of Ineos-Grenadiers climbed to the top of the General Classification and Fuglsang sits 26 seconds behind him. Although Alaphilippe arrived with the Schachmann group, the World Champion was penalized with 20 seconds for getting a bottle within the last 10 kilometres.
