Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) has maintained the lead of the General Classification after the first real demanding day on the Pyrenees.

The Emirati team was part of the forces controlling the pace of the peloton during the first part of the stage. After all Pogacar's teammates were gone, on the last climb of the day, the winner of the 2020 Tour de France underwent attacks by riders like Rigoberto Uran and Richard Carapaz, but he could follow them all and this reduced GC group arrived together to the finish line, maintaining the classification pretty much as it was -except for Guillaume Martin, who fell seven places.

"The stage was tough, for the second consecutive day we faced a demanding course," said Pogacar. "I expected to have to respond to an attack as the Ineos-Grenadiers started to force the pace early, but fortunately I had the legs to respond. The team supported me in the early and middle stages of the day and then on the last climbs luckily I had no problem at all, and I could stay with my rivals.

"It was a good day for me, even though the temperature was very hot, I'm going into the last week with a decent lead."
